Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and inhibits the acid-producing bacteria responsible for dental caries, making it one of the most effective public health interventions for oral health. The adequate intake is 3–4 mg per day for adults, primarily met through fluoridated drinking water and toothpaste. Chronic high intake (fluorosis) can cause dental mottling or, at very high doses, skeletal damage.
