Thiamin (B1)

vitamin Unit: mg

Thiamin (vitamin B1) is a coenzyme in carbohydrate and branched-chain amino acid metabolism, enabling cells to extract energy from glucose. It is also essential for normal nerve function. Severe deficiency causes beriberi (affecting the heart and nervous system), and in people with chronic alcohol dependence it can lead to Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome. The RDA is 1.1–1.2 mg per day; whole grains, legumes, and pork are major sources.
