Niacin (vitamin B3) is the precursor to NAD+ and NADP+, coenzymes involved in more than 400 enzymatic reactions — predominantly energy metabolism and DNA repair. At pharmacological doses (well above dietary levels), niacin raises HDL cholesterol and reduces triglycerides. The RDA is 14–16 mg niacin equivalents per day. Meat, fish, fortified grains, and peanuts are leading sources.
