Sodium

mineral Unit: mg

Sodium is the primary electrolyte in fluid outside cells and is required for nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, and fluid balance. However, chronically high intake is the leading dietary driver of hypertension and stroke. The Dietary Guidelines recommend staying below 2,300 mg per day; average intake in the United States is closer to 3,400 mg, most of it from processed and restaurant foods.
